Root Canals

Dr. Bowcutt believes that it’s always preferable to save a patient’s natural teeth whenever possible. That’s why he offers root canals to his patients from throughout the Cedar Park, TX, area.

Having a root canal may not sound very appealing, but the truth is that this is a very common treatment that is no more uncomfortable than any other dental procedure. And with modern dental sedation methods, dental work in general – including root canals – is virtually painless.

In fact, patients who need root canals are much more likely to be experiencing pain before the procedure rather than during or after it. And, most importantly of all, root canals are an excellent method of saving teeth that might otherwise have to be extracted.

The Purpose of Root Canals

If you develop an infection that has spread to the pulp of a tooth, a root canal procedure is often recommended to get rid of the infection and save the tooth. The process involves Dr. Bowcutt administering dental sedation to the patient, then removing the pulp and the nerve of the affected tooth. As it turns out, a tooth doesn’t need either of these to be fully functional. After that, Dr. Bowcutt seals off the tooth to protect it. He may also recommend fitting a crown over the top of the tooth.

Do You Need a Root Canal?

If you’ve ever had any type of infection, you know it’s not a pleasant experience. The same holds true for an infection in a tooth. Although it’s possible that you may need a root canal without having any symptoms whatsoever, most people experience one or more of the following:

  • A severe toothache that gets worse when you apply pressure on the tooth
  • Gum tissue around a certain tooth that is red, swollen, and/or painful
  • Sudden sensitivity to hot and cold
  • A dark tooth
  • A sore on the gums
