Crowns (also referred to as “caps”) are nothing new in dentistry. In fact, crowns have been around for well over 100 years! These remarkable dental appliances are designed to completely cover the tooth surface, right down to the gum line.
Typically, Dr. Bowcutt uses a crown to restore a tooth that is badly decayed and can’t be repaired with a filling. But there are other uses for porcelain crowns as well, and we are pleased to provide these to our patients from throughout the Cedar Park, TX, area.
Uses for Porcelain Crowns
Because the porcelain dental material is extremely strong and durable, and can be made to identically match the shade of the person’s natural teeth, they are used for many different purposes. In addition to restoring a tooth that has been badly damaged by decay, porcelain crowns are also used to protect teeth that have undergone a root canal procedure. Porcelain crowns are also used in dental appliances such as bridges, and on top of a dental implant as a means of replacing a missing tooth.
The Porcelain Crown Procedure
Getting a new porcelain crown usually requires two trips to our Cedar Park, TX, office. During the first visit, Dr. Bowcutt will make an impression of the tooth. A dental lab will use this impression to create the new porcelain crown. After the impression is made, Dr. Bowcutt will remove all existing decay from the tooth, then thoroughly clean the surface and supply the patient with a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. Then, usually 10 days to 2 weeks later, the patient will return to our office to be fitted with the new permanent crown.
