When it comes to maintaining good oral health, one of the most important things you can do involves cleaning and prevention, which is why Dr. Bowcutt urges his Cedar Park, TX, patients to visit our office at least twice a year for professional cleanings and oral exams.
Maintaining good oral health involves so much more than simply having your teeth cleaned, although that is without a doubt a vital part. Here are some of the services you can expect when you visit our office for a routine cleaning and exam.
What’s Involved in Cleaning and Prevention
Oral cancer screening – Like so many cancerous conditions, oral cancer is often not obvious until it’s in the latter stages. Fortunately, it’s usually quite treatable if it’s caught early on. Dr. Bowcutt performs an oral cancer screening on an as-needed basis for patients as part of an oral exam.
Periodontal therapy – Gum disease is a common oral health problem for adults in the US. And you might have early-stage gum disease and not even know it. As part of your oral exam, Dr. Bowcutt and his hygienist will check for signs of gum disease, and will recommend the appropriate treatment to resolve the issue before it gets worse.
Teeth cleaning – No matter how hard you try, you’ll never be able to remove all the plaque and tartar from your teeth on your own. Only a trained hygienist can do that for you. Although the frequency that you’ll need professional cleanings varies somewhat depending on your oral health, most people should have their teeth cleaned twice a year.
X-rays – It’s hard to detect tooth decay by simply doing a visual examination. That’s why dental x-rays are an important part of many oral exams. We’ll perform x-rays of your teeth and gums as needed so we can treat any problems as early as possible.
Home care – Of course, you’ll never enjoy a lifetime of good oral health if you don’t take care of your teeth and gums each and every day at home. You should brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day, every day.
