What To Expect After an Extraction
Prior to the extraction, the dentist may decide to administer some local anesthetic to reduce the pain and discomfort. Then, the dentist will extract the damaged tooth. In some cases, this may involve an incision in the gum. In other cases, the dentist may be able to extract the tooth without making a single incision.
Once the process is done, the local anesthetic will gradually wear off over the next few hours. You should expect to have some minor swelling and bleeding following a tooth extraction. There might be some minor discomfort as well. If you feel like the bleeding is getting worse, or if the pain has become unbearable, you should reach out to your dentist for help.
The Recovery Process
You should be able to drive yourself home following a tooth extraction. Pay if you are getting lots of teeth extracted, there is a chance that the dentist may recommend general anesthesia. If that is the case, you may not be able to drive yourself home. Most people who are only getting one or two teeth pulled are able to drive themselves home from the dentist’s office immediately after the visit.
Depending on the nature of the extraction, your dentist may give you a limited diet. You should follow all dietary instructions to help you put your mouth in the best position possible to recover. In just a few days, you should be back to normal. You should be able to return to your routine and 48 to 72 hours. Keep in mind that your jaw has also been through a significant amount of trauma, so it may take several weeks for your jaw bone to heal completely. You may also want to talk to your dentist about possible replacement options for your missing teeth.
